Lebron

Lebron James never went to college but he is being recruited by the lure of New York City, a friendship with a mogul, the benefit of playing with great young team and with good friend Dwayne Wade, or staying in his hometown. He is the biggest catch of the NBA free agency sweepstakes; the Nets, Knicks, Bulls, Heat, and Cavaliers all wanted to sign him.

James wants to expand his brand globally; the Nets have owner and Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov, plus rap mogul Jay-Z who is a part owner. He recently had a second meeting with the Knicks, and they were talking about him being a star to New York City. James is a big Yankees fan and that could ultimately play a part of it. The Heat want him to team up with Wade and maybe another superstar such as Chris Bosh. The Bulls are emphasizing that playing with young talent like Derek Rose could get Lebron closer to a NBA title. The Cavaliers also had a meeting, showing him a cartoon featuring him and his friends just like his favorite television show Family Guy.  James will make a decision soon, the question remains: what does he want to do more, expand his brand or win an NBA title?

The Pitiful Pirates

The Pirates are 25 and 50 after realizing fans are more interested in bobbleheads and fireworks. This once proud organization is now one of the biggest losers in sports history. They are compared to the Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Clippers as an embarrassment to sports fans.

Being a lifelong Pirate fan it turns my stomach to see this team become a joke. They have changed players, managers, ownership, and stadiums but their luck has simply not changed. There are two things that I believe could make things better: Bob Nutting selling the team to Mark Cuban or revenue sharing in baseball.  Since it’s highly unlikely that either of these two things will happen I have decided to no longer support this team. The Pirates clearly don’t care about winning; why should I root for an organization that doesn’t care about winning.

Penguins

I had the thrill of watching the Penguins Stanley Cup parade last year and it was bigger than the Steelers Super Bowl parade. There were 375,000 people lining the streets of downtown Pittsburgh and it was one of the best moments I’ve enjoyed.

It was the end of the return to glory for an organization that a few years ago was supposed to move to another city. Despite not repeating it this season, the future is bright with the Consol Energy Center opening, young talent being signed to long term deals, and a passionate fan base. The best is yet to come for the Penguins. The October 7th game versus the Philadelphia Flyers can’t come soon enough for me.

A Quick Thought on the Pirates

When Joe Mauer signed an 8 year, $184 million dollar deal with the Minnesota Twins during this past off-season it was publicized to send a message to their fans: winning is important.  The Pirates, who have been losing for the past 17 years, used their preseason to talk about promotion and ticket plans. What message does that send to their fans? What is important to the team? Apparently as long as ownership is making money winning is on the back burner.  Until Bob Nutting signs young talent to long-term deals instead of selling them away and using us as a farm team, the Pirates will never be winners.
