Hurting Penguins

The Penguins are leading the Metropolitan Division, but are dealing with missing players due to injuries and suspensions right now. Injuries to Rob Scuderi, Brooks Orpik, Kris Letang, Beau Bennett, Evgeni Malkin, Andrew Ebbett, have taken a toll on the roster, add to that and a five game suspension to James Neal, plus a possible suspension to Derek Engelland. Part of the credit for the Penguins success goes to the young players that were called up from Scranton-Wilkes Barre who are making big contributions. Young defensemen such as Robert Bortuzzo and forwards like Jason Megna. 2012 top draft pick Olli Matta has also been making big contributions his rookie season, justifying the Pens decision to keep him on the roster rather than sending him back to his junior team at the start of the season. The only good part of these injuries that they have occurred in December instead of before the playoffs. The Penguins still have the talent to win the Stanley Cup, but they have to avoid anymore injuries.

Week 15 Vs Bengals

The Steelers came up with a big win over the Cincinnati Bengals 30 to 20. The defense put the pressure on Andy Dalton and kept the Bengals running game, and receiver A.J Green in check. Ben Roethlisberger had a good game going 19 for 25 for 191 yards and a touchdown. Le’veon Bell had a solid game running and receiving the ball, and became the 3rd Steelers rookie to gain 1,000 yards from scrimmage in his rookie season. Antonio Brown had a 12 yard touchdown catch, and 67 yard punt return for another touchdown. Special Teams also made big contributions not only with Brown’s punt return for a touchdown, but also Shaun Suisham’s 3 field goals, and recovering a fumbled punt snap that led to the Bell touchdown. The Steelers are 6 and 8 and still have a chance of making the playoffs. However, they have to play the Green Bay Packers next Sunday at Lambeau Field with kickoff at 4:25 P.M.

Brooks

Last night’s game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Boston Bruins was a heated matchup with the Bruins winning 3 to 2. The game was marred by an incident that took place during the 1st period when the Bruins Shawn Thornton cheap shoted the Penguins Brooks Orpik. Thornton slew footed Orpik and then punch him twice in the face while Orpik was on the ice. Orpik was carried out on a stretcher and went to Massachusetts General Hospital. Orpik was released from the hospital and traveled home with the team. These kinds of actions should not be allowed in the NHL if they want to clean up the game. Thornton will have a face to face hearing with the NHL tomorrow and he might be in for a long suspension.

Week 13 VS Dolphins

Ben Roethlisberger had a good game throwing for 349 yards and 3 touchdowns. Le’veon Bell had a good game running the ball for 61 yards, but the Steelers went away from him later in the game. Antonio Brown had an outstanding game, catching 5 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown, and almost won the game on a crazy final play of the game, but stepped out at the Dolphins 12 yard line. Despite 2 sacks and an interception, the defense had missed tackles often today especially on the Charles Clay touchdown that wound up being the winning score that gave the Dolphins the lead in the 4th quarter. Special Teams gave up a blocked punt and it likely Tomlin not punting late in the 4th quarter. The Steelers lost 34 to 28 and they have 5-8 record going into next Sunday’s game versus the Cincinnati Bengals with an 8:30 P.M kickoff at Heinz Field.

Mike Is Talking

I had a chance to listen to Mike Tomlin’s press conference and it opened up with Coach Tomlin talking about the sideline incident from Thursday’s night game versus the Baltimore Ravens. Tomlin was very honest and admitted that he made a mistake, plus he will take any punishment that the NFL is willing to give out. He talked about the integrity of the game and how much he cares about it. He also mentioned that he could lose his spot on the NFL’s competition committee, and might get a little ribbing from other coaches. In previous blog I said that Tomlin will get a huge fine for his action, and anything more than that is an excessive, but again he is dealing with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell who has been known to deal excessive punishments to Steeler players over the years.
